High speed network redundancy
Tuesday, August 16, 2016
Ken Austin, Lead Product Marketing Specialist for I/O and networks
Information is important in keeping critical processes and operations running smoothly. And network outages, however minor, can prove rather costly. This is a driving force behind the installation of managed Ethernet switches and the deployment of a network redundancy solution The Device Level Ring (DLR) redundancy mechanism realizes recovery times of less than three milliseconds in the event of a network failure and is heavily promoted for EtherNet/IP applications. DLR ensures nearly bump-less switch-over times and is supported by many current two-port EtherNet/IP field devices, which can be networked in a ring topology using DLR. Additionally, in many non-EtherNet/IP topologies, such as networking wind turbines, a redundancy mechanism is required to enable switching over as fast as possible in the event of an error. The DLR redundancy mechanism provides that needed speed. Learn more about DLR redundancy, and how it can help you and your clients.

Wednesday, September 17, 2014
Jeff Miller, PMP, Director of Project Management, Interstates Control Systems
Many of us have sat back at the end of a project and thought "Wow! How did this project's scope get so out of control? Where was the disconnect between the proposal and what we delivered to the client?" Jeff Miller will walk us through some keys to successful project scope management. Most of us work for clients who expect us to be experts in delivering the solutions; when they scope the project they know we will fill in the blanks. If the project manager doesn't do a good job of defining the "real" scope of the project up front, your team may not get paid for significant portions of extra work they perform. It may also lead to areas of rework following factory acceptance testing when the client informs you that your system is not going to do what is required.

Daniel Roessler, owner/consultant, DANR Consulting
Front end loading (FEL) studies result in more detailed scopes, improve estimates, increase schedule accuracy and help identify project risks. The benefits of shifting engineering activities forward are well documented, but FEL can also improve project management results. This presentation will examine how FELs present an opportunity for project managers to leverage FEL deliverables as the foundation for their project definition, progress monitoring and reporting, and change order management activities.
Best practices in project risk management
Wednesday, July 16, 2014
One of the key responsibilities of a project manager is to actively identify and aggressively manage project risks. To do this effectively the PM must set a goal of early recognition and aggressive intervention in order to ensure high client satisfaction with minimal negative swings in gross profit. Project risks must be actively managed throughout the entire project lifecycle if risk management is to be effective. This presentation will focus on best practices in risk management that include risk identification, risk quantification, risk prioritization and risk response planning and implementation. Note: This webinar is based on Jeff’s presentation at our conference. It is being repeated because of its high ratings by attendees.

Wednesday, June 11, 2014

For more than 12 long years Windows XP has been a stable and significant workhorse of an operating system (OS) and not only for enterprise-wide desk top PCs. But you may be surprised to find out Windows XP is heavily used in industrial applications including ruggedized PCs (e.g., HMIs, programming stations and engineering laptop) as well as embedded into thousands of devices that control and monitor many factory automation, process control operations, power, water and transportation infrastructure installations. What will your clients do? More importantly, what can you do to help your clients? Join us for this webinar where you will learn more about the Windows XP issue and how you can create value to your clients on this important change.

Got Credits? Most CSIA members are missing the boat offered by the Federal R&D Tax Credit
Tuesday, February 19, 2013
Brian Lefever, VP of Operations, Titan Armor; Dawson Fercho, National Director Channels/Awareness, Titan Armor
The Federal R&D tax credit (based on congresses’ definition) could certainly improve with a title like the “Trial and Error” tax credit. These incentives are for taxpayers of any size that use their heads and problem solve daily. This includes designing, developing or improving products, processes, techniques (think waste reduction or efficiency improvements), formulas or software. At its most basic level the credit is available to all successful U.S. businesses. What is meant by "successful?" If you are making money and you develop products/services on U.S. soil then you are recognized as being successful. Because you are successful you have full ability to take advantage of these valuable incentives that are specifically on the books to help reduce your cost to compete annually against a global market. Considering treasury data, which shows only 1 in 10 U.S. companies currently take advantage of these valuable incentives, it’s time to raise participation levels and it starts with education.

Using an employee ownership plan for business continuity
Thursday, May 17, 2012
Corey Rosen, Co-founder and Senior Staff Member, National Center for Employee Ownership (NCEO)
An employee stock ownership plan (ESOP) has been designed by Congress to be the most tax efficient way to transfer ownership in a closely held company. An ESOP lets the company use tax-deductible future profits to buy out one or more owners, either all at once or over time. Employees do not buy the shares themselves, and sellers can get a capital gains tax deferral. Learn whether this makes sense for you. About the presenter: Corey Rosen received his Ph.D. in political science from Cornell University in 1973. He taught politics at Ripon College in Wisconsin before working on Capitol Hill for the next five years, where he helped initiate and draft legislation on ESOPs. In 1981, he formed the NCEO. Over the years, he has written, edited, or contributed to dozens of books, articles and research papers on employee ownership. He is generally regarded as the world’s leading expert on employee ownership.

Independent contractor liability: What you don't know will hurt you
Friday, August 26, 2011
Mark Voigtmann, CSIA Attorney, Baker & Daniels
One of the major decisions facing any control system integrator is whether to "hire" or "contract" with key personnel. Choosing to hire is certainly the more inclusive route, but it carries with it a host of legal obligations. While the obligations may be fewer if the label "independent contractor" is chosen instead, the labels are less important than the actuality. In other words, what your company may call an "independent contractor" may be the government's idea of an employee. In the next CSIA webinar, Independent Contractor Liability: What You Don't Know Will Hurt You Mark Voigtmann will be interviewing two lawyers with different, but related perspectives on the independent contractor vs. employee quandary. Greg Dale, will answer questions regarding what factors are reviewed by the agencies/courts in making determinations as to whether an individual is truly an independent contractor—including the risks of misclassification. Gayle Skolnik will discuss the effect of the distinction on the benefits to which a worker may be entitled.

Tuesday, July 26, 2011
David Stone, Principal, Stone and Company
The idea of seeking out regular, reliable and candid feedback from clients is simultaneously exciting and terrifying. It feels great to get the "attaboys" and the glowing testimonials when things go well, but what kind of feedback do you want or get when you screw up? This important program will teach you how to ask for feedback from your clients and what to do with it when you get it. David Stone is back by popular demand after his debut at our conference in April.
Hiring best practices: Can you afford the cost of a bad hire?
Tuesday, June 28, 2011
Evy Trost, Managing Director, National Engineering Resources
Hiring employees is one of the most important tasks for managers. One would think that it’s an employers’ market due to high unemployment. However, the employer isn’t always in the driver’s seat as it tries to attract high quality candidates. Most top quality candidates are gainfully employed and not actively searching for a career change. Those who are may pursue several opportunities leading to multiple offers. Establishing “Hiring Best Practices” is more important than ever. What does your interview process say about your firm and its ability to attract the right talent? Evy Trost will provide some important insight on this important task. Some of the topics will be: establishing an effective interview process, employment branding opportunities most companies are missing, employee retention - once you’ve hired the right talent, how do you hold on to them?

Thursday, April 7, 2011
Todd Youngblood , CEO of The YPS Group

He knows you’re tired of all the hype, and this webinar is specifically designed to avoid it. Two specific strategies that are delivering results right now will be reviewed in detail. Yes, they both depend on social media, but the real points are properly harvesting and packaging valuable content, timing, traditional nuts and bolts sales skills and creating a no-baloney business experience for the customer.

Risk control hierarchy clarifies electrical safety
Wednesday, March 24, 2010
The Risk Control Hierarchy (RCH) in the ANSI-Z10 standard provides electrical safety professionals with an excellent roadmap for setting the right safety objectives that result in the reduction of electrical risks. Combining our understanding of electricity with our principles of safety is the key to improving electrical safety. For example, when a Department of Energy electrical safety program is analyzed under the light of the RCH, many potential electrical safety improvements begin to jump off the page. The RCH not only helps improve a plant electrical safety program, but it also inspires manufacturers to improve their electrical equipment designs. Lastly, the RCH provides a means to measure the effectiveness of an electrical safety initiative much the same way a project manager uses financial measurements (Return on Investment or Payback Analysis) to evaluate a project.
