Strategic Planning is Not an Event, It is a Continuous Process
Wednesday, June 8, 2016 11:00 a.m. EDT
Anthony Valasek, PREMIER System Integrators

Strategic planning is critical to the growth and development of an organization. Like the trickling source of a river, the direction of an organization starts with vision and mission statements, turns into a stream of strategic objectives, and transforms into a river of goals for departments, teams and individuals. Successfully navigating the river requires never losing your heading or risk running aground. While the current may take you slightly off course, you have to make continuous corrections. Regularly measuring your progress toward your objectives is required to reach your destination. Whether you have never considered strategic planning or have been doing it for years and would like to gather another perspective, please join this brief webinar to gain fundamentals for strategic planning and how that process can improve your organization’s operations.

About the presenter: Anthony Valasek, MBA, PMP, PhD, is the engineering manager at PREMIER System Integrators,  a CSIA Certified Member in the greater Nashville area.

This webinar is part of CSIA’s efforts to promote and provide training around the CSIA Best Practices and Benchmarks document. This webinar will focus on sections 1.1.1 through 1.1.3.

Increasing Plant-level Awareness of the Industrial Network
Wednesday, December 16, 2015
Presented by Panduit
Ethernet networks are becoming a critical link between the Manufacturing and Automation Systems and the Business Systems. With the number of connected industrial devices expected to increase dramatically in the future—the Internet of Things (IoT) is rapidly shifting toward an astonishing 50 billion connected devices by 2020—this creates a greater possibility of disruptions. With so many connected devices to manage, detection, diagnosis and problem resolution have become a costly and time-consuming task.IntraVUE, a premiere network diagnostic software tool, addresses the challenges unique to industrial environments, providing visibility into all levels of devices and connectivity, and enabling operational field technicians to efficiently communicate with IT resources. IntraVUE also helps to speed both documentation and deployment, and provides advanced analytics to optimize ongoing performance. Armed with this information, the software empowers controls professionals to shift from a reactive response approach—i.e.—responding only when a disruption occurs—to a pro-active approach, which can greatly improve both the uptime and performance of these critical, real-time networks.Recording to come.

Keys to Success in Project Scope Management
Wednesday, September 17, 2014
Jeff Miller, PMP, Director of Project Management, Interstates Control Systems
Many of us have sat back at the end of a project and thought "Wow! How did this project's scope get so out of control? Where was the disconnect between the proposal and what we delivered to the client?" Jeff Miller will walk us through some keys to successful project scope management. Most of us work for clients who expect us to be experts in delivering the solutions; when they scope the project they know we will fill in the blanks. If the project manager doesn't do a good job of defining the "real" scope of the project up front, your team may not get paid for significant portions of extra work they perform. It may also lead to areas of rework following factory acceptance testing when the client informs you that your system is not going to do what is required.

How New Cyber Threats are Changing the Role of the System Integrator
Tuesday, March 19, 2013
Eric Byres, P. Eng., ISA Fellow, CTO and VP Engineering
Recent events have dramatically changed the landscape for designing critical control systems. The Stuxnet worm has shown the world how control systems can be hacked. Now international criminals, government agencies and hackers are on the offensive. As a result, governments and standards organizations are changing the rules and making new demands. February’s Executive Order by President Obama is just one example. Standard bodies like ISA and IEC are also setting standards for cyber security in industrial systems.

This talk will discuss these changes and how cyber security impacts the responsibilities of the systems integrator. At the same time, it also provides a revenue opportunity as clients look to their system integrators for solutions.

Eric Byres is recognized as one of the world's leading experts in the field of SCADA and control systems security. Eric’s background as a process controls engineer allows him to bring a unique combination of deep technical knowledge plus practical field experience to his role as CTO and VP Engineering at Tofino Security, a Belden brand. Eric has provided security guidance to government agencies, major oil companies and power utilities on security protection for critical infrastructures. He has researched and written extensively about Stuxnet and is Chair of ISA99 Task Group 2, conducting an analysis of ANSI/ISA-99 standards with respect to Stuxnet.

Got Credits? Most CSIA members are missing the boat offered by the Federal R&D Tax Credit

Tuesday, February 19, 2013

Brian Lefever, VP of Operations, Titan Armor

Dawson Fercho, National Director Channels/Awareness, Titan Armor
The Federal R&D tax credit (based on congresses’ definition) could certainly improve with a title like the “Trial and Error” tax credit. These incentives are for taxpayers of any size that use their heads and problem solve daily.

This includes designing, developing or improving products, processes, techniques (think waste reduction or efficiency improvements), formulas or software. At its most basic level the credit is available to all successful U.S. businesses.

What is meant by "successful?" If you are making money and you develop products/services on U.S. soil then you are recognized as being successful. Because you are successful you have full ability to take advantage of these valuable incentives that are specifically on the books to help reduce your cost to compete annually against a global market.

Considering treasury data, which shows only 1 in 10 U.S. companies currently take advantage of these valuable incentives, it’s time to raise participation levels and it starts with education.

Using an Employee Ownership Plan for Business Continuity
Thursday, May 17, 2012

Corey Rosen, Co-founder and Senior Staff Member, National Center for Employee Ownership (NCEO)
An employee stock ownership plan (ESOP) has been designed by Congress to be the most tax efficient way to transfer ownership in a closely held company. An ESOP lets the company use tax-deductible future profits to buy out one or more owners, either all at once or over time. Employees do not buy the shares themselves, and sellers can get a capital gains tax deferral. Learn whether this makes sense for you. About the presenter: Corey Rosen received his Ph.D. in political science from Cornell University in 1973. He taught politics at Ripon College in Wisconsin before working on Capitol Hill for the next five years, where he helped initiate and draft legislation on ESOPs. In 1981, he formed the NCEO. Over the years, he has written, edited, or contributed to dozens of books, articles and research papers on employee ownership. He is generally regarded as the world’s leading expert on employee ownership.

Independent Contractor Liability: What You Don't Know Will Hurt You
Friday, August 26, 2011
Mark Voigtmann, CSIA Attorney, Baker & Daniels

One of the major decisions facing any control system integrator is whether to "hire" or "contract" with key personnel. Choosing to hire is certainly the more inclusive route, but it carries with it a host of legal obligations. While the obligations may be fewer if the label "independent contractor" is chosen instead, the labels are less important than the actuality. In other words, what your company may call an "independent contractor" may be the government's idea of an employee. In the next CSIA webinar, Independent Contractor Liability: What You Don't Know Will Hurt You Mark Voigtmann will be interviewing two lawyers with different, but related perspectives on the independent contractor vs. employee quandary. Greg Dale, will answer questions regarding what factors are reviewed by the agencies/courts in making determinations as to whether an individual is truly an independent contractor—including the risks of misclassification. Gayle Skolnik will discuss the effect of the distinction on the benefits to which a worker may be entitled.

Risk Control Hierarchy Clarifies Electrical Safety
Wednesday, March 24, 2010

The Risk Control Hierarchy (RCH) in the ANSI-Z10 standard provides electrical safety professionals with an excellent roadmap for setting the right safety objectives that result in the reduction of electrical risks.  Combining our understanding of electricity with our principles of safety is the key to improving electrical safety.  For example, when a Department of Energy electrical safety program is analyzed under the light of the RCH, many potential electrical safety improvements begin to jump off the page.  The RCH not only helps improve a plant electrical safety program, but it also inspires manufacturers to improve their electrical equipment designs.  Lastly, the RCH provides a means to measure the effectiveness of an electrical safety initiative much the same way a project manager uses financial measurements (Return on Investment or Payback Analysis) to evaluate a project.

The First Ten Important (Indeed Indispensable) Things To Scrutinize in Every Automation Contract
Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2010

The contract documents have just arrived. There they lie, three inches thick on your desk. The project seemed like a good idea when you wrote your proposal, but now what? Do you actually try to read the whole thing or just shrug your shoulders and sign on the dotted line? In a free half-hour webinar (the first in a series of four for CSIA members oriented toward managing legal risk) CSIA general counsel Mark Voigtmann and his automation law colleague Brian Clifford explain The First Ten (Important, Indeed Indispensable) Things To Scrutinize in Every Automation Contract.

Many of us have sat back at the end of a project and thought “Wow! How did this project’s scope get so out of control? Where was the disconnect between the proposal and what we delivered to the client?” Jeff Miller will walk us through some keys to successful project scope management. Most of us work for clients who expect us to be experts in delivering the solutions; when they scope the project they know we will fill in the blanks. If the project manager doesn’t do a good job of defining the “real” scope of the project up front, your team may not get paid for significant portions of extra work they perform. It may also lead to areas of rework following factory acceptance testing when the client informs you that your system is not going to do what is required. Some key areas that will be discussed are:

·        Typical problems with project scope

·        Collecting requirements

·        Defining scope

·        Creating a work breakdown structure

·        Validating scope

·        Controlling scope
