2nd Annual Business as an Investment Workshop

Building and Realizing Business Value: Headwinds and Opportunities Ahead
A Deep Dive Exclusively for SI Business Owners and the C-Suite
Tuesday, April 16 (Prior to the 2024 CSIA Conference)

Would you put your life savings into an investment account and not check it again until you are ‎ready to retire? The obvious answer is no.  ‎

However, entrepreneurs do this every day with their businesses. They spend so much time ‎working in their business that they leave themselves no time to work on their business.
 ‎
While someone is managing your investment portfolio, you are the one who needs to manage ‎your business as both your job and your most valuable investment.

As an owner, regardless of when you plan to leave your business, focusing on your business as ‎an investment is your most important work.‎

If this sounds familiar, then this workshop is for you. ‎

2024 is expected to be a mix of predictable uncertainty with the presidential election and the ‎ongoing maneuvering by the Fed for a post pandemic “soft landing” (interest rates, inflation, ‎recession fears). While this is likely to have a cooling effect on businesses, investor interest in ‎industrial automation businesses will continue to drive M&A activity. These conflicting drivers ‎make strategic planning more difficult and at the same time critically important to the success ‎of your business.  ‎

This session will combine the insights from a team of experts who have advised numerous ‎system integration business owners on growing and realizing the maximum value from their ‎business with the hands-on experience of other SI owners and business leaders.  Through a ‎combination of presentations and presenter-facilitated roundtable discussions, attendees will dive into various topics ‎including:‎

  • How to set up your business for growth?‎
  • Should I focus on organic growth or growth through acquisition?‎
  • How do I determine the right timing for a transaction?‎
  • How do I marry the current economic situation with my strategy?‎

Participant Takeaways:‎

Attendees will walk away from the session with the following actionable insights:‎

  • Time-sensitive economic events of public concern such as inflation, interest rates, labor ‎market conditions, consumer spending and business investment.‎
  • Practical and actionable advice on an increasingly complex labor market.‎
  • Tools that company leadership can use to become better data-driven decision makers in ‎running their businesses.‎
  • Update on the Mergers & Acquisitions and capital placement markets, including for ‎Automation and Control System Integration industry. ‎
  • An understanding of how valuations are connected to the economic cycle.‎
  • Summary of key transactions and active buyers and investors for the industry.‎
  • Overview of strategic options available to companies with exit planning or capital ‎needs.‎
  • Definition of transaction value and how competition is such a major determinant of this ‎key fundamental term.‎
  • Participants will acquire a solid foundation in business valuation, covering topics such as ‎financial statement analysis, discounted cash flow (DCF) analysis, market-based ‎approaches, and asset-based methods.‎
  • An improved and applied understanding of the various business valuation ‎methodologies.  Understand when each is appropriate and why businesses have more ‎than one value.‎
  • Explanation of different strategies and tactics for enhancing the value of a business. ‎Topics may include operational improvements, growth strategies, cost optimization, and ‎risk management.‎

Register early to reserve your spot!  The workshop early bird rate is $850 before January 31, regular rate is $950 between February 1 and April 1 and late registration is $1,070 after April 1. This workshop is limited to only 30 SI owners and their key stakeholders. Breakfast and lunch, as well as two breaks are included.  Non-members are welcome and encouraged to register.

See what participants from 2023 said about the workshop:

The Value Workshop was a reminder of why it is important to work “on” the business rather than “in” the business! The workshop provided practical strategies for building enterprise value. It was a good investment of my time.

- Ron Rich, Polytron

Every business owner should take this workshop. It has given me a new perspective on my business, causing me to pump the breaks on my exit strategy. The entire day was packed with information; I had no idea of what I didn't know. These guys are pros at breaking down the details of selling your business, complete with tips and tricks. I left with ten pages of notes and a seven-step plan. Thank you to CSIA for providing such an educational workshop.

-Joe Martin, MartinCSI
